Fitness Managers Guide:
Personal Trainer Readiness Curriculum

By: Christin Everson, MS

A thoughtful training curriculum to help Fitness Managers prepare newly certified Personal Trainers.

Enhancing Personal Trainer confidence and competence

Created by Christin in 2014, the Personal Trainer Readiness Course is a curriculum with 9-rounds of practical, experiential and reflective learning, guided by the fitness manager, to ensure the confidence and competence of new Personal Trainers.

The curriculum includes 60+ documents that guide the Fitness Manager in facilitating experiential and reflective learning

What's Included

An Evidence-Based Program Founded on Client Care

The course content is founded on the philosophy that providing clients with comprehensive, intentional care, using inclusive language, and focusing on the wide range of benefits of physical activity beyond just weight loss better supports and increases a client’s self-efficacy.

Research demonstrates that the more we can provide experiences to clients that help them feel successful, the higher their self-efficacy and the more likely they are to continue participating in exercise.

This product asks Trainees to consider how their words, body language, programming, and coaching affect a client who may feel unsure about their future with exercise. It asks Trainees to be intentional about creating a safe place to help ensure clients belonging in exercise spaces.

Personal Trainers who complete the course will have:

1.     Enhanced competency in facilitating a successful and comprehensive exercise experience for clients.

2.     Successful completion of the Initial Consultation that centers the client’s needs while collecting required information and employing basic behavior change strategies.

3.     Increased confidence and proficiency in writing custom exercise programs that are safe, comprehensive, balanced, and client-centered.

4.     Demonstrated proficiency in teaching and communicating basic exercise movements to clients, including providing direct feedback, modifications, progressions, and intensity monitoring.

Helping Fitness Managers Create an Effective and Reliable Training Funnel

Providing you the tools to help you invest in the competence of your Personal Trainers.

Fitness Manager Benefits

  1. A reliable training funnel that creates continuity in your personal training services.

  2. Supports regular staff onboarding, making keeping a high-quality and full staff team easier.

  3. Ready to implement! Minimal preparation is needed to implement into your program.

  4. Evidence-based training materials founded on caring for the comprehensive well-being of the client.

  5. 1:1 meeting with Christin Everson, a fitness expert and consultant who has trained countless Personal Trainers and Managers using this format.

  6. Staff development program that invests in the education of your team members.

Using the PTRC

  1. Fitness Manager hires a newly certified Personal Trainer or a Personal Trainer with little experience.

  2. Fitness Manager schedules 1-2x/week recurring meetings with the New Personal Trainer (Trainee) for the next 3-4 months.

  3. In each meeting, the Manager reviews the content provided from each round, and the Trainee completes their practical tasks.

  4. The Trainee and Fitness Manager reflect on the previous rounds work, the trainees takeaways, areas of success and areas for growth.

  5. Trainee completes all 9 rounds of training and are prepared to work with healthy clients.

Stop letting newly certified, minimally competent Personal Trainers practice on vulnerable, paying clients.

Instead, invest in their practical, experiential learning, which will help ensure their knowledge, skills, and success working with clients.

What Fitness Managers are saying

“In my first year as Program Manager of Fitness at the Activities & Recreation Center (ARC) UW Bothell/Cascadia College, I wanted to add Personal Training to our services at the Fitness Center. I was recommended to reach out to Christin Everson to build the program and assist with training and implementation. It has been amazing to get to work with Christin – she understood the needs and wants of the Personal Training program for the ARC Fitness Center, took the time to give me and our student employees feedback on their training, and provided all the tools and resources I will need going forward. I highly recommend Christin and the services she offers, because with her help, I am confident with the launch of the program and training future student personal trainers on my own.”

This course helps Fitness managers lead new Personal Trainers along a path to practice each of these skills in easy-to-digest steps with feedback each time. These carefully curated steps allow Trainers to continue learning in a safe environment so by the time they take on clients, they are fully ready to give them a well-rounded Personal Training experience. Every fitness manager should use this with their teams for cohesion, a full understanding of the personal training experience, and the creation of a culture of care in their business.

What Personal Trainers are saying

As a prior Certified Personal Trainer/Group Fitness Instructor and now Family Medicine Resident I would highly recommend this course. Not only are you learning new exercises, but you are learning communication techniques to effectively instruct your clients. Every client moves differently and to successfully guide them through the proper mechanical pattern takes proper vocabulary and execution. Additionally, you learn exercise modifications to help meet the individual’s needs with the goal of helping them build their way up to the full dynamic movement. As a Family Medicine Resident, I still utilize these skills to guide patients through proper mechanics for injury prevention on a daily basis, whether they are young adolescents learning dynamic exercises for the first time or elderly patients learning to prevent falls.

Christin’s training course benefited me in my professional development as a novice personal trainer. Through her course I was able to develop various forms of exercise cueing and program development while also working through strategies to help potential clients identify goals in their initial consults. The course also helped me develop through the use of mentorship with a more experienced trainer. I felt much more prepared to handle clients through the completion of this course rather than seeing clients immediately after certification. I would highly recommend all facilities with novice trainers to utilize this course to help their professional development and set them up for success!

Brandon Nakano, PT, DPT

Christin's Personal Trainer Readiness Course helped me in starting my career as a detail-oriented fitness professional. From conducting structured and purposeful consultations with clients, to creating sustainable workout plans that account for each individual's needs, the course teaches trainers how to have a comprehensive approach in providing a positive experience for clients. The course will guide you through industry concepts like acquiring and retaining clients, building rapport for healthy relationships, creating a team culture focused on learning, and utilizing teaching methods that increase program adherence among clients. After almost 8 years as a personal trainer in the health and wellness industry, I still apply the principles of communication and programming that the course taught me. I recommend this course not only for newly certified personal trainers looking to make a lasting impact on their clients, but also for experienced professionals that want to mentor others in having a comprehensive approach to personal training.
